Bert Hene and Clara L. Frohsin, Couric’s maternal grandparents, were the children of Jewish emigrants from Germany. Couric’s father hailed from France, England, Scotland, and Germany. She grew up as a Presbyterian. In a report for Today, she traced her patrilineal ancestry back to a French orphan who immigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century and became a cotton broker.

Katie Couric First Husband

In 1989, Couric married attorney John Paul “Jay” Monahan III. On July 23, 1991, she gave birth to their first daughter, Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan, in Washington, D.C.; on January 5, 1996, Caroline “Carrie” Monahan was born in New York City. Her husband died of colorectal cancer in 1998, when he was 42 years old. This demonstrates how a well-known individual can draw attention and support to worthy causes.”

Couric began her career at NBC News in 1989 as the Deputy Pentagon Correspondent. Couric worked as an anchor substitute from 1989 to 1991. She replaced Bryant Gumbel as Today’s host; Jane Pauley and Deborah Norville as Today’s co-anchors; Boyd Matson, Garrick Utley, Mary Alice Williams, and Maria Shriver as Sunday Today’s co-hosts; and Connie Chung, Bob Jamieson, John Palmer, Deborah Norville, Faith Daniels, Margaret Larson, and Ann Curry as anchors of the former NBC News program NBC News at Sunrise. She also filled in for Daniels, Norville, and John Palmer as Today’s news anchor.

Couric returned to NBC to co-host the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics with Mike Tirico, as well as to provide additional Winter Olympic coverage and athlete interviews. During the opening ceremony, she incorrectly suggested that the Dutch use their skates like a normal mode of transportation during the winter, eliciting criticism and amusement from the US Embassy in the Netherlands and others. Couric apologized for her intended compliment not “coming out,” which the Embassy accepted and invited her to the Netherlands for a tour.

She became the first solo female anchor of the “big three” weekday evening newscasts in 1994. On May 31, 2006, she announced her departure from CBS to anchor the Evening News. For 14 years on Today, she hosted the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Throughout her career, Couric has won numerous television reporting awards, including the prestigious Peabody Award for her series Confronting Colon Cancer. She has also co-hosted the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games since the Summer Olympics in 2000.

Couric has conducted interviews with many international political figures and celebrities, including Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush, as well as First Lady Barbara Bush. Couric’s first and final interviews were conducted by John F. Kennedy Jr.

On September 10, 2012, the first episode aired.

Couric’s domestic affiliation has included The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg, Kelly Ripa, and Michael Strahan of Live! with Kelly and Michael, as well as some members of the General Hospital cast.

Katie has been renewed for a second season by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, which will begin in the fall of 2013. However, The Hollywood Reporter reported in October 2013 that Katie was on the verge of cancellation due to a low Q Score, low ratings, and a reported disdain for her core female audience. During its first season, the syndicated show averaged a 1.7 household rating and a 1.8 in the 2013–14 season. Katie was canceled by Disney–ABC Domestic Television in December of 2013. Production was supposed to last until June 2014.
