Samantha Vinograd is a former U.S. government official who now shares her insights as a foreign policy commentator for CNN. She held the position of Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism, Threat Prevention, and Law Enforcement Policy at the Department of Homeland Security from July 2021 until December 2023.
After completing her education, Vinograd kicked off her career at the U.S. Department of the Treasury during the George W. Bush administration. There, she worked as an international economist and even took on the role of deputy attaché to Iraq. In August 2009, she made the leap to the National Security Council under the Obama administration, where she took on several key roles, including director for Iraq, director for international economics, and senior advisor to National Security Advisor Thomas E. Donilon.
In 2013, Vinograd made a shift to the private sector, joining Goldman Sachs to focus on public–private partnerships. She later took the reins of global public policy at Stripe before stepping into the role of national security analyst for CNN. Additionally, she has spent several years as a senior advisor at the Biden Institute at the University of Delaware.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Vinograd has lent her expertise to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, earned the title of David E. Rockefeller Fellow at the Trilateral Commission, and served as a Millennium Fellow at the Atlantic Council. She also sits on the board of the Women’s Foreign Policy Group and co-founded Global Opportunity Advisors, a geopolitical risk and policy advisory firm, alongside Morgan Ortagus.
