The next year, she and her colleagues—James Campbell, Matt Johnston, Michelle Ainsworth, and Mitchell Toy—were nominated for a Walkley Award for their investigation into the behind-the-scenes dealings in the office of then-Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu, which uncovered secret communications involving senior political advisers.

In 2015, she transitioned to the Herald Sun’s Canberra bureau. That December, she snagged the 2015 Walkley Award for All Media Scoop of the Year for her investigation into the “Choppergate” expenses scandal, which exposed the misuse of parliamentary travel entitlements by then-Speaker Bronwyn Bishop. Her work on this scandal also earned her two Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards.

By 2017, Smethurst had won her second Walkley Award, once again for Scoop of the Year, this time for revealing taxpayer-funded trips taken by MP Sussan Ley to the Gold Coast to buy a flat. These revelations ultimately led to Ley’s resignation as Health Minister.
