Geoff Bennett Biography
Geoff Bennett is a well-known American broadcast journalist who co-anchors PBS NewsHour alongside Amna Nawaz. His impressive career covers a wide range of media, including radio, cable, broadcast television, and digital journalism, where he has worn many hats as a reporter, editor, and news anchor across various platforms.
Bennett graduated with honors from Morehouse College in 2002, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. During his senior year, he interned at ABC News, where he had the privilege of being mentored by Carole Simpson, who was then the weekend anchor for ABC World News Tonight. This internship opened the door to his first professional job as an off-air production assistant at World News Tonight in New York, and he quickly climbed the ranks to become an associate producer.
In 2007, Bennett made his way to NPR in Los Angeles, taking on the role of digital producer and editor for News & Notes, where he also made regular on-air appearances. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 2009 to work as an editor for Weekend Edition. Starting in 2013, he reported on camera from Washington for NY1 News and other Time Warner Cable news channels, and he even took on the role of guest host on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal.
Bennett returned to NPR in 2017 as an on-air reporter based in Washington, focusing on Congress and the White House. Later that same year, he joined NBC News as a White House correspondent and became a substitute anchor for MSNBC.
In November 2021, while still contributing to NBC and MSNBC, Bennett was appointed chief Washington correspondent for PBS NewsHour and took on the role of anchor for PBS News Weekend. By January 2023, he and Amna Nawaz were named co-anchors of PBS NewsHour, succeeding Judy Woodruff. The program’s coverage of the Israel–Hamas war earned a Peabody Award in 2023.
