He is a descendant of German immigrants to the United States throughout the nineteenth century. Beck was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended Mount Vernon’s Immaculate Conception Catholic School.
Glenn and his elder sister relocated to Sumner, Washington, with their mother to attend a Jesuit school in Puyallup. Beck’s mother drowned in Puget Sound on May 15, 1979, while out on a small boat with a male partner about west of Tacoma, Washington. The man who had brought her out in the boat with him also died in the water. Mary Beck “looked to be a textbook drowning victim,” according to a Tacoma police report, but a Coast Guard investigator suggested that she may have purposefully gone overboard. In interviews on television and radio, Beck has depicted his mother’s death as a suicide.
Beck and his elder sister went to their father’s house in Bellingham, Washington, when their mother died, where Beck graduated from Sehome High School in June 1982. Beck also spent time with his maternal grandparents, Ed and Clara Janssen, in Iowa on a regular basis.

Beck married Tania, his second wife, in 1999. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in October 1999, partially at the prompting of his daughter Mary, after going on a church tour together in search of faith.
