Prior to his role at Lazard, McGuire spent 15 years as a senior executive at Citigroup and held executive positions at both Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.
In addition to his finance career, McGuire was a candidate in the 2021 New York City Democratic mayoral primary.

Raymond started his career as finance personnel in 1982 at First Boston and a member of Wasserstein Perella companies. He then got a job with Merrill Lynch where he spent several years before moving to Citigroup in 2005, where he worked as the global co-head of investment banking.
McGuire was one of the highest-ranking and longest-serving African American business executives on Wall Street before announcing his candidacy for mayor. He was chosen as the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, but the job went to John C. Williams.
During his time at Citigroup, McGuire has served as a business advisor for the Time Warner Cable split, ConocoPhillips’ acquisition of Burlington Resources, Koch Industries’ acquisition of Georgia-Pacific, the sale of Electronic Data Systems to Hewlett-Packard, and others.
McGuire is also an art collector and the current chairperson of the Studio Museum in Harlem. McGuire was a bundler to Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns and mentioned as a possible candidate for a position in the United States Department of the Treasury in 2013.

In October 2020, Raymond McGuire announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City in the 2021 election, with Valerie Jarrett serving as co-chair of his campaign. He emphasized that his campaign would focus on addressing racial unrest following the George Floyd protests and promoting economic recovery amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Within three months of launching his campaign, McGuire had raised $5 million, receiving significant support from the business community.
In May 2021, during an interview with The New York Times editorial board, McGuire and fellow candidate Shaun Donovan were asked about the median sales price of a home in Brooklyn. McGuire estimated it to be “somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, if not higher,” while Donovan guessed around $100,000—both figures far below the actual median price of $900,000. Nicole Gelinas, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, described their estimates as “out of touch with what’s going on in the city.”
McGuire ultimately finished in seventh place in the Democratic primary, receiving 2.3% of the vote.
