Suzanne Malveaux is an American journalist and correspondent who, until 2023, served as an anchor on CNN International’s Around the World as well as various editions of CNN Newsroom. During her tenure at CNN, she also worked as the network’s White House correspondent and frequently filled in for Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room. She departed the network in 2023.
Career
Malveaux began her television career at New England Cable News in Boston, where she worked as a general assignment reporter from 1992 to 1996. She later relocated to Washington, D.C., joining NBC affiliate WRC-TV from 1996 to 1999. There, she described herself as a “rock-and-roll” reporter, covering local news and crime stories.
In 1999, she was recruited to NBC News by Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert. Over the next three years, Malveaux reported from Washington, including serving as a Pentagon correspondent, and later worked out of Chicago. During this period, she covered major national and international events such as President Bill Clinton’s impeachment, the Elián González case, the Kosovo War, the 2000 presidential election, the September 11 attacks, and the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
In August 2007, Malveaux served as moderator of the 31st annual National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention. A longtime member of the organization, she had previously participated on multiple panels at NABJ conventions.
Ahead of the Democratic and Republican national conventions, Malveaux anchored a 90-minute documentary on Senator Barack Obama as part of a two-part series examining the 2008 presidential candidates. She also appeared as a panelist questioning candidates during the Democratic presidential primary debate in South Carolina in January 2008, sponsored by CNN and the Congressional Black Caucus. In addition, she played a prominent role in CNN’s 2004 election coverage and its Emmy Award–winning coverage of the 2006 elections.
Malveaux later expanded her White House reporting responsibilities by becoming the primary substitute anchor for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, a two-hour weekday program on CNN. In 2011, she was named dayside anchor of CNN Newsroom. The following year, she hosted Aspire’s eight-part series The Root 100.
In 2014, Around the World was canceled, and Malveaux returned to Washington, D.C., to focus on caring for her mother, who was living with ALS. She ultimately departed CNN in January 2023 to prioritize family commitments
