Prior to pursuing television journalism, Nair wrote for Today’s Chicago Woman magazine and worked as a reporter for Talk Radio News in Washington, D.C. She began her career in television news as a general assignment reporter at WGEM-TV, the NBC affiliate in Quincy, Illinois. She also worked for WYCC-TV, Chicago’s PBS station, and Evanston Community Cable Channel, Illinois’ public, educational, and government access (PEG) cable TV station.
Nair then went on to work as an anchor and reporter for KOLN/KGIN-TV in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she anchored daily morning and afternoon newscasts. She was then the lead evening reporter and anchor at KWGN-TV, Denver’s CW affiliate. She joined the station in July 2004 and has covered a wide range of topics, including the Jon Benet Ramsey murder investigation and the Bailey, Colorado school shootings.
Nair joined ABC News in December 2007 as an anchor/correspondent for ABC News Now. She anchored live coverage and news briefs for ABC’s digital network in that capacity. From September 17, 2008, to February 18, 2011, Nair was co-anchor of ABC’s World News Now and America This Morning. On both shows, she was paired with Jeremy Hubbard and, later, Rob Nelson. Nair announced on Thursday, February 17, 2011, that Friday, February 18, would be her final night on World News Now. It was also her last day at ABC News.
Peggy Bunker, a former KDVR Denver anchor, was her immediate successor. The February 18 edition of World News Now featured tributes to Nair in each of its three segments, with appearances from current and former colleagues such as Jeremy Hubbard. On her last day, she served a hot breakfast to the crew. Nelson also gave a brief farewell to Nair at the end of America This Morning.
Nair worked at MSNBC in New York in 2011, serving as a newsreader on Martin Bashir and anchoring the early morning news shows Early Today on NBC and First Look on MSNBC. Vinita was most recently a co-anchor on CBS This Morning Saturday with Anthony Mason.
