Phil Black is an Australian journalist and former CNN International freelance reporter based in London. He joined CNN in April 2007, covering major stories across Europe. In 2008, he was part of the network’s team reporting on the Russia–Georgia conflict, which erupted over the separatist region of South Ossetia. He later gained further prominence for his frontline coverage of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Before his tenure at CNN, Black worked for Seven News in Sydney, New South Wales. He joined the network in 2000 as a senior producer before transitioning to the reporting team. During his time there, he covered notable events such as the CityRail crisis, the Redfern riots, the 2002 Christmas bushfires, and the 2010 “pay for access” scandal involving Sarah, Duchess of York. One of his most significant assignments came in December 2004, when he reported from Sri Lanka following the devastating Boxing Day tsunami.
In 2006, Black spent several weeks in Bathurst covering the Bathurst 1000—the first race held after the death of motorsport legend Peter Brock—and delivered live reports to Seven News almost nightly. Prior to joining Seven News, he worked for approximately five years at the Nine Network, where he reported for the travel program Getaway.
