Murthy’s February 2010 interview with Jim Devine was used as key evidence in the former Labour MP’s expenses fraud trial. The politician was sentenced to 16 months in prison. He called his interview with Richard Ayoade in October 2014 “the perfect joke interview.” Off-screen, Ayoade’s increasingly blunt responses had caused Guru-colleague Murthy’s Jon Snow to burst out laughing.
Robert Downey Jr. walked out of an interview with Murthy in 2015 while promoting the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, after the journalist inquired about the actor’s relationship with his father, drug use, and alcoholism. Murthy hosted a weekly radio show on LBC 97.3 from 2003 to 2005; hosted UK Leaders Live, interviewing the three main party leaders in the UK’s 2005 election; and hosted the BBC Radio 4 series Hindu Lives in 2005. He used to write a column for the Metro and the Asian publication Eastern Eye. Guru-Murthy has appeared in a Gorillaz comic documentary, as a guest on The News Quiz and Taskmaster, and as a cameo in Bremner, Bird, and Fortune, Shaun of the Dead, and Dead Set. Murthy serves on the board of the Duchenne Children’s Trust. In 2013, he founded the Duchenne Dash, a 24-hour cycle ride from London to Paris.
