Amol Rajan Biography
Amol Rajan is a British journalist and broadcaster who has served as Media Editor of the BBC since December 2016. From June 2013 to June 2014, he was the editor of The Independent newspaper. When The Independent announced in February 2016 that it would no longer publish a print edition and would only publish online, Rajan was retained as “editor-at-large” for a time.

Rajan was born in Pune to a Pune mother and a Tamil father from Kumbakonam. Due to Tamil naming customs, Rajan was given the name V. Amol, with the V standing for his father’s given name, Varadarajan. When he arrived in England, his name was changed to Amol Varadarajan, and the family later changed their surname to Rajan. He was three years old when his family relocated to England, and he grew up in Tooting, South West London. He has not believed in God since he was 15 years old, despite being the son of Hindu parents.

During the 2006–2007 season, Rajan was a secondary presenter on The Wright Stuff, a daytime talk show on the Five network. He also worked as a researcher on the show. In August 2007, he joined The Independent newspaper as a news reporter, sports correspondent, columnist, comment editor, and editor of Independent Voices. He has also contributed to The Salisbury Review and written a Monday column for the London Evening Standard, as well as restaurant criticism for The Independent on Sunday. When Rajan’s appointment as editor of the Independent was announced in 2013, he became the first non-white editor of a national newspaper in over a century, with Rachel Beer née Sassoon being the first to make that claim as editor of the Sunday Times and the Observer.
Chris Blackhurst, his predecessor as editor of The Independent, was promoted to Group Content Director. When The Independent’s owner, Evgeny Lebedev, announced in February 2016 that the print edition would be phased out, it was revealed that Rajan would remain with the company to help facilitate the transition. Rajan was the media advisor to Lebedev, the son of Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB economic attaché, for about eighteen months before becoming editor of The Independent. During a BBC Radio 2 broadcast in October 2019, Rajan was accused of engaging in “client” and “crony” journalism by journalist Peter Oborne.
Rajan’s role as editor-at-large for The Independent website came to an end when he was named the BBC’s first Media Editor in November 2016, and he began his new position on December 12, 2016. On the BBC Asian Network, he has also hosted The Big Debate.
Rajan has been providing holiday cover for several BBC Radio 2 presenters, including Simon Mayo, Jeremy Vine, and Zoe Ball, since 2017. Rajan has appeared on The One Show on occasion. He took over as host of The Media Show on BBC Radio 4 in May 2017, succeeding Steve Hewlett.
