Begnaud’s coverage of Hurricane Maria when it hit Puerto Rico in October 2017 was one of his most notable assignments. He spent more time than any other network news correspondent covering Puerto Rico’s recovery, traveling to the island numerous times and breaking numerous significant stories. His distinct, unrivaled reporting prompted government action, and he provided consistent coverage across all platforms, particularly social media, throughout the crisis.

His coverage of Hurricane Maria earned him the prestigious George Polk Award for public service in 2018, the first time a journalist had received the award since 1978. According to the nominating committee, the award “places a premium on investigative work that is unique, resourceful, and thought-provoking.” He was also honored with the Radio Television Digital News Association’s First Amendment Leadership Award for his significant contribution to the protection of the First Amendment and press freedom.

Begnaud has covered major news stories around the world for CBS News, including the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, the terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, and the devastating earthquake that struck Ecuador in April of 2016, killing hundreds and injuring thousands.
