Jerod Smalley Biography

The Worthington, Columbus native Jerod Smalley is an award-winning broadcast journalist working as the Sports Director at WCMH-TV, NBC4 in Columbus, Ohio. Previously he worked as the weekend sports anchor at WSAZ in Huntington, West Virginia.

Jerod Smalley NBC4, Columbus

Jerod joined NBC4 in 2004 as a weekend sports anchor. Where he wrote, edited and anchored weekend sportscast. During weekday he produced, wrote, shot and edited stories. After serving for two years as the weekend sports anchor, he was promoted to the sports director and anchor position in 2006. He is the current sports director at NBC4.

While at NBC4, he has reported many events around the globe, including the 2016 Rio Olympics, Super Bowls, NBA Finals, World Series, and multiple Ohio State national championship appearances. Throughout his career, he has been honored several awards including being named as Ohio’s Best anchor in news, weather and sports four times by Associated Press. He currently anchors “The Autism Puzzle,” Show at NBC4. The show basically features local stories about people living with autism. Through The Autism Puzzle show, Jared and the station have won four regional awards. He is also a keynote speaker who addressed at the Autism Speaks National Leadership Conference. He is also a board member of the Walk Now For Autism Speaks in Columbus.

Prior to joining NBC4, he previously worked as a weekend sports anchor at WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia. At WSAZ-TV, he produced and anchored the weekend sportscast. She also shot, wrote and edited content for daily newscasts. He started his career at KSNT as the sports director for two years in Topeka, Kansas. There he led sports coverage.

In August 2018, Jerod suffered a stroke and later discovered that he had a hole in his heart after seeking medical attention. He felt a stroke after going to bed where he lost feeling the right side of his face and felt numbness and tingling in his right arm for about 20 seconds.

After undergoing several tests at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital it was discovered that Smalley had suffered a stroke that he had suffered earlier as well. His stroke was caused by blood clotting. The hole in his heart was patched by surgeons with a non-invasive procedure.
