Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Mill Basin neighborhood as the eldest of three children to Joan (Iacono) and James John Kimmel, both of whom worked for American Express and were executives at IBM. He was raised Catholic and served as an altar server as a child. Kimmel’s mother is of Italian descent from Ischia, Naples, and her family immigrated to the United States following the 1883 earthquake.
German immigrants were two of his paternal great-great-grandparents. Several generations ago, his family’s surname was “Kümmel.” Kimmel’s uncle, Frank Potenza, was a regular on Jimmy Kimmel Live! from 2003 until his death in 2011. During the final season of Win Ben Stein’s Money, his cousin Sal Iacono took over Kimmel’s former co-hosting duties, and he later became a writer and sketch performer on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Kimmel’s son was born with a rare congenital heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) with pulmonary atresia, which was discovered three hours after birth when he had a purplish appearance. He underwent successful surgery at the age of three days. Kimmel’s first guests after his son’s birth were cardiac surgeon Mehmet Oz, who explained the condition, and snowboarder Shaun White, who was born with TOF.
Kimmel later used his son’s condition to criticize a previous guest, Senator Bill Cassidy, who co-authored a congressional healthcare bill, for failing to meet the “Jimmy Kimmel test” for access for patients with preexisting conditions. The monologue was widely debated as part of a larger discussion about the American healthcare system.

Kimmel left The Man Show permanently in January 2003 to host his own late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, on ABC. Despite its name, the show has not aired live since 2004, when censors were unable to properly bleep censor actor Thomas Jane’s barrage of swearing. Kimmel was named the “biggest badass on TV” in the April 2007 issue of Stuffmagazine.com. In October 2013, a new segment of the show, “Kids Table,” featured five and six-year-olds discussing the government shutdown in the United States and their debts.
The most recent appearance was titled “The Handsome Men’s Club,” and it featured Kimmel and the “Handsome Men” discussing being handsome. Jimmy Kimmel Central
Kimmel, who did not want to work in television at first, began writing for Fox announcers and promotions and was quickly hired to do on-air promotions himself. He turned down several TV shows offers from producer Michael Davies because he was uninterested in the projects until he was offered a spot as the comedic counterpart to Ben Stein on the game show Win Ben Stein’s Money, which premiered on Comedy Central in 1997. His quick wit and “everyman” demeanor were a welcome relief from Stein’s monotonous vocal style and faux-patrician demeanor. The pair won an Emmy for Best Game Show Host for their efforts.
Kimmel co-hosted and co-produced Comedy Central’s The Man Show in 1999, while still on Win Ben Stein’s Money. In 2001, Kimmel left Win Ben Stein’s Money and was replaced by comedian Nancy Pimental, who was eventually replaced by Kimmel’s cousin Sal Iacono. The success of The Man Show enabled Kimmel, Carolla, and Kellison to form Jackhole Productions and create and produce Crank Yankers for Comedy Central, as well as The Andy Milonakis Show for MTV2. Kimmel also co-wrote and produced the feature film Windy City Heat, which won the Festival Prize and the Comedia Award for Best Film at the 2004 Montreal Comedy Festival.
