Between 1998 and 1999, Desjardins worked for the local television station WBTW in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when she was fired. She then went on to work as a freelance reporter for The Sun News, a Myrtle Beach daily, and for the news agency Reuters at the same time. She left The Sun News after a few months in October 1999 to work as a political correspondent for the Columbia NBC affiliate WIS, while continuing to work for Reuters. She covered the South Carolina Legislature, the dispute over the Confederate Flag’s display at the State House, and the Republican presidential primaries in 2000 for WIS. Desjardins joined the Associated Press’ Washington, D.C. bureau in 2003, where she covered the 2004 presidential election, Medicaid, hurricanes, and the Iraq War, among other topics.
Desjardins then went on to work for CNN for nine years, from 2005 to 2014. She was the Congressional correspondent for CNN Radio, but she also contributed to CNN.com and CNN’s news channel on occasion. Desjardins covered the 2010 Haiti earthquake for CNN Radio, winning a Sigma Delta Chi Award for his coverage. She was reassigned to CNN’s Washington Bureau, where she worked as a Capitol Hill correspondent, after CNN Radio was shut down in June 2013. She was a member of the 2008 presidential primary coverage team.
The team’s coverage earned CNN a Peabody Award in 2008. During her time at CNN, she co-wrote a personal finance book with Rick Emerson called Zombie Economics: A Guide to Personal Finance. Avery Publishing published it in May 2011. Desjardins presided over the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association’s annual luncheon in June 2014. She departed CNN in August 2014 after being laid off.
Desjardins joined PBS NewsHour as a political reporter in October 2014 and was promoted to Political Director in July 2015, reporting on camera from the studio and the United States Capitol. She also contributes to the NewsHour website with pieces. Capitol Hill Correspondent is her current position on the NewsHour. Desjardins was covering the counting and certification of the 2020 Presidential Electoral College votes when the building was assaulted by angry mobs on January 6, 2021. Despite being assaulted by a rioter, she continued to broadcast live during the attack and was evacuated to the Longworth House Office Building with members of Congress and personnel. Desjardins returned later that evening to cover the delayed certification procedure and stayed in the Capitol until 3:45 a.m. the next morning.
