Stephen Colbert is a stand-up comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and television host from the United States. From 2005 to 2014, he hosted the satirical Comedy Central program The Colbert Report, and beginning in September 2015, he hosted the CBS talk show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

His father, James William Colbert Jr., was an immunologist and medical school dean at Yale University, Saint Louis University, and, finally, the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was the school’s first vice president of academic affairs beginning in 1969. Lorna Elizabeth Colbert (née Tuck), Stephen’s mother, was a stay-at-home mom.
His surname was originally pronounced /kolbâ€TMr/ KOHL-bâ’rt in English, but his father preferred /koslskohl-BAIR. He has 15/16ths Irish ancestry, and one of his paternal great-great-grandmothers was of German and English ancestry. His father and two brothers died in the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 while attempting to land in North Carolina on September 11, 1974, when he was ten years old.

McGee-Colbert first met Jon Stewart in 1990, before meeting her future husband. They met at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, where Hydrogen Jukebox had its world premiere. Colbert later described his first meeting with Evie as a “love at first sight” encounter; however, moments later, they both realized they had grown up together in Charleston and shared many mutual friends. Although according to his own admission, he was not particularly political prior to joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert described himself as a Democrat in a 2004 interview. Colbert supports the implementation of Bernie Sanders’s Medicare for All plan, calling it a “sensible fix to Obamacare.” When asked about his position on abortion, Colbert declared himself to be pro-choice. Colbert has stated that his views on the intersection of faith and politics are similar to those of Cesar Chávez.

CBS announced in a press release on April 10, 2014, that Colbert “will succeed David Letterman as host of The Late Show, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast.” CBS announced on January 12, 2015, that Colbert would begin hosting the Late Show on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. George Clooney was the first guest on the new Late Show. The show is far more political in nature than David Letterman’s Late Show.
Colbert hosted the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired on CBS on September 17, 2017, during his tenure as host of The Late Show. He and his Spartina Productions company recently signed a deal with CBS Studios.
