Zak worked as a reporter for WNCN in Raleigh, North Carolina, before moving to Virginia in March 2020. While in the Triangle, Zak covered stories from all over the state, including Hurricanes Florence and Dorian, as well as the 2020 presidential election. He also covered the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle and the 2019 mass shooting in Virginia Beach at the city’s municipal center.
In Palm Springs, California, Zak worked as an anchor and investigative reporter for KESQ-TV and CBS Local 2. Zak covered wildfires, earthquakes, high-profile court cases such as the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial and Turpin child abuse case, the 2016 deadly Palm Springs tour bus crash, the 2016 and 2018 elections, and California legalizing recreational marijuana use while in the Coachella Valley.
Before moving west, he worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor for WJHG-TV and WECP-TV, the NBC and CBS affiliates in Panama City Beach, Florida. During his time at UF, he worked as an anchor and reporter for WUFT News, a PBS and NPR station serving North Central Florida.
He is also working on a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. Zak has received numerous awards from the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters, Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas (RTDNAC), Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Association, and the National Broadcasting Society, in addition to a regional Emmy nomination. Outside of the newsroom, he enjoys playing guitar, traveling, and rooting for the Florida Gators. Zak is also honored to serve on the American Cancer Society’s Virginia Area Board of Re Joan Lunden.
