After a brief stint in radio, he worked for United Press International in print journalism in the mid-1980s. He became the Central American Bureau Chief for what was then known as the Spanish International Network in December 1984. (today known as Univision). He was one of the group of journalists who launched Telemundo News, which later became Noticias Telemundo/HBC, in 1987. He went on to work as a television news reporter in Miami, where he worked for WTVJ from 1988 to May 1996, when he was hired by CBS. When he began anchoring for the CBS News program This Morning in August 1996, he made history as the first Cuban-American to host a network news program.

By the year 2000, he had returned to Spanish-language network television as the host of Esta Manana, a new Telemundo morning show. Later, he co-hosted Esta Maana, Telemundo’s early morning news and entertainment show, as well as Cada Da, Telemundo’s current affairs show. By 2002, the multilingual anchor had begun anchoring Enfoque con José Diaz-Balart, a once-a-month interview program on Telemundo, on which he had interviewed a wide range of newsmakers, including political leaders and presidential hopefuls. He made history once more when he filled in for Contessa Brewer on MSNBC Live in the 12 p.m. time slot for the week of June 20 through 24, 2011, being the first American journalist to broadcast both English and Spanish newscasts on two networks at the same time.

Diaz-Balart replaced Chris Jansing as host of MSNBC’s 10 a.m. news hour from 2014 until 2016. On November 10, 2014, it was reported that he would take up hosting duties on The Daily Rundown on November 17, 2014, with the show growing to two hours and absorbing his eponymous show, which had previously aired during the second hour. As part of a larger restructure of MSNBC’s daytime programming in 2015, The Daily Rundown was renamed MSNBC Live with Jose Diaz-Balart. He also started serving as a fill-in anchor for NBC Nightly News on Saturdays in late 2015. In July 2016, he was named host of the show, and he still holds that role today.

Diaz-Balart moderated a Democratic Town Hall with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in Las Vegas on February 18, 2016. Diaz-Balart co-moderated the inaugural Democratic Presidential Debates on NBC and Telemundo on June 26 and 27, 2019. He announced his departure from the nighttime versions of Noticias Telemundo on September 7, 2021, to lead a new 10 a.m. show on MSNBC called José Daz-Balart Reports. He’ll continue to headline NBC Nightly News on Saturdays, as well as anchor Telemundo’s breaking news and special events coverage, and host monthly specials.
