Jim began his journalism career as a weekend anchor and the San Jose bureau chief for KPIX in San Francisco from 1976 to 1980. Avila later worked as a general assignment reporter for WLS, an ABC-owned station in Chicago, from 1980 to 1984. Later, he became a general assignment reporter for WBBM-TV, where he covered the Beirut War, the TWA hijacking, the Nicaraguan civil war, and the Mexican earthquake.

From 1994 to 1996, Jim Avila worked as an investigative reporter for KNBC in Los Angeles. During his time there, he was the primary reporter on the O.J. Simpson criminal trial. KNBC won the Golden Mike Award and an Emmy Award for its trial coverage in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Avila previously worked at NBC News as a National Correspondent for “Nightly News.” Jim discusses various domestic issues such as the 9/11 attack and its aftermath, as well as the DC sniper shootings. Avila also reported from Afghanistan and Iraq, where he filmed from inside NBC’s Baghdad hotel compound.

Avila began her career as a Chicago bureau correspondent before being promoted to National Correspondent at NBC.
