Donvan has worked for ABC News for more than two decades, serving as Chief White House Correspondent, Chief Moscow Correspondent, Amman Bureau Chief, Jerusalem Correspondent, and Correspondent for ABC News Magazine “Turning Point. Donvan has recently gained praise for his work as a freelance reporter covering the Iraq war, for which the Chicago Sun Times named him one of the ten War Stars.
Donvan began his career as a foreign journalist when he was 25 years old, working for ABC Radio in 1980. He was promoted to television reporter by the network in 1982. He was allocated to the West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as the rest of the Arab world. He worked for CNN as a London-based journalist from 1985 to 1988, covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The New York Daily News compared his live reporting on the US bombing of Libya to that of Edward R. Murrow. In 1988, he returned to ABC.
He covered nearly every major news event overseas in the 1980s and 1990s, including the fall of Communism (he was in Red Square the night the Soviet flag fell, and in Romania when Nicolae Ceausescu was arrested), the Iran-Iraq War, both Persian Gulf Wars, two Royal Weddings, Anwar Sadat’s assassination, the bombing of the Beirut marine barracks, and the end of the nuclear arms race.
In 1993, Donvan moved to New York, where he worked on ABC News’ feature shows and “World News Tonight,” as well as serving as an anchor on “Good Morning America” and Weekend News. He was assigned to the network’s Washington bureau and the White House beat in 1997, covering the campaign financing scandal and the president’s international excursions.
He began working for “Nightline” in 1998 and is one of the program’s few correspondents. He filled in for Ted Koppel on occasion and hosted many interviews for “Nightline’s” production of “UpClose.”Donvan has been honored by the National Association of Black Journalists, the Committee of 100, and the Media Action Network for Asian-Americans, and has received two Emmy Awards, seven Overseas Press Club Awards, and two Cine Golden Eagles.
