The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the country’s public broadcaster. It is run by a government-appointed board and is mostly supported by direct funds from the Australian government. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 establishes ABC as a publicly owned, politically independent, and completely accountable organization. ABC Commercial, the company’s profit-making section, also contributes to content provision funding.
The Australian Broadcasting Commission was founded by an act of federal parliament on July 1, 1932, as the Australian Broadcasting Commission. The Australian Broadcasting Firm, a private company founded in 1924 to supply programming for A-class radio stations, was virtually supplanted by it. The ABC was given statutory powers that strengthened its independence from the government and expanded its position as a news-gathering organization.
