Star Jones The View
Jones’ career on The View, which spanned nine seasons, was marred by controversy at times. Her overzealous self-promotion, according to ABC, alienated viewers. Barbara Walters claimed that she kept Jones’ gastric bypass surgery a secret because he requested it and because lying on the show turned off the audience. Jones was later discovered to have pressed for product placement in exchange for free products and services. Jones’ contract was set to expire on July 13, but ABC found Jones had published a story in People magazine about her contract not being renewed after the show ended on June 27.
“What you don’t know is that my contract for the 10th season was not renewed,” Jones remarked. Barbara Walters told the audience the next day that she had been “blindsided” and that Jones would no longer be appearing on “The View.” Jones denied that she was to blame for the dip in ratings, claiming that the ratings for The View in 2004-05 were the greatest in the previous nine seasons. Her leaving produced an almost six-year schism between her and Walters. Jones appeared as a guest on The View on February 22, 2012.
Star Jones truTV
Jones revealed on March 7, 2007, that she would return to her old network, Court TV (now truTV), as executive editor of daytime programming and host an eponymous live weekday talk show focusing on the law and pop culture. On August 20, 2007, Star Jones debuted as a guest-driven live program (with taped pieces) covering current events in pop culture, entertainment, crime, and justice.
Six months later, her show was canceled, and Jones announced her departure from truTV due to “programming selection changes.” On February 1, 2008, the final episode of Star Jones aired. Jones was paid the remainder of her $24 million, three-year contract, and the network said Jones was dropped from the lineup because she was “too serious” for the channel’s tabloid-focused coverage. “[Jones’] show averaged 186,000 viewers and, by its final telecast, was down in the neighborhood of 85,000,” according to The Washington Post. CNBC.com listed the talk program as one of the “10 Notable Talk Show Failures” in January 2011.
