Among the more significant stories Koinange has covered for CNN in Africa are the Darfur crisis, civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the Niger famine, for which he won an Emmy. The Nigerian government chastised Koinange in early 2007 for his coverage of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). Koinange accompanied masked MEND guerillas to a camp where they were holding a number of Filipino hostages, according to his report. The Nigerian government claimed the report was “staged,” which CNN denied. He has also reported on news outside of Africa, including extensive coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the United States and the Iraq War.

CNN announced Koinange’s departure from the network on May 29, 2007. Seven months after leaving CNN, Koinange was hired as a news anchor by K24, a new Kenyan television station that began test broadcasts in Nairobi in December 2007. He hosted the Capital Talk Show.
