Robert, 52, committed suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge on February 11, 2017, two weeks after the divorce was finalized. Ashton did her residency at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center (now Mount Sinai Morningside) in New York and is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. She worked as an attending physician at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, a Mount Sinai Medical Center affiliate in Englewood, New Jersey, before going into private practice.
Ashton has written multiple magazine pieces and contributed to The Record of Bergen, New Jersey’s health blog. She’s also the author of three books: The Body Scoop for Girls (2009), which teaches adolescent girls about puberty; Your Body Beautiful (2012), which tackles health and wellness issues in middle-aged women; and Eat This When You’re Expecting, Not That (2016), which outlines a pregnancy diet. Ashton began her broadcast career in 2006 as the Fox News Channel’s first female medical contributor. She appeared on TLC’s A Baby Story, PBS, and The Dr. Oz Show on Oprah & Friends XM radio.
She joined CBS News in 2009 as a medical correspondent, contributing to all CBS media platforms and making regular appearances on The Early Show and CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. WCBS Radio and its national affiliates continue to showcase her as a featured expert commentator. Ashton co-hosted the ABC television show The Revolution, which was canceled in April 2012 due to low ratings.
She became a senior medical commentator for ABC News in 2012, appearing often on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight. She joined the daytime discussion show The Doctors as an on-air personality in 2013. She has been a co-host for GMA3: What You Need To Know shows since March 2020. The Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey honored Ashton as a Woman of Achievement in 2007. The Octoberwoman Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness presented her with the Hope for the Future Award in 2008.
