Lee has vast reporting experience in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia. Prior to joining CBS, he worked as a Jerusalem-based CNN correspondent. While living in Egypt in 2011, Lee joined CNN and covered the country’s revolt and following 2013 coup. He also covered both sides of the Syrian and Libyan civil wars, reporting on both sides of the fight. In 2011, he was injured while fighting for control of Sirte, Libyan leader Muammar Al Gaddafi’s last stronghold, when an RPG exploded close to him, killing a nearby paramedic.
Lee covered the seven-week battle in Gaza in 2014. Following the failed coup attempt in 2016, he was the first foreign journalist to enter Turkey. He’s also covered tensions on the Korean peninsula and terror strikes in London as part of his job. Lee moved to Jerusalem in 2017 to cover news in Israel and the Palestinian territories for CNN. Exclusive reporting with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Palestinian Security Forces, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad were part of his work there (PIJ). He was the first journalist to get permission from the IDF to infiltrate Israel through adjacent Hezbollah tunnels. PIJ also provided him with unique access to tunnels and weapons used to attack Israel.
Before joining CNN, he worked as a multimedia reporter for the Egyptian newspaper “The Daily News Egypt,” where he covered the events leading up to the Arab Spring. He also worked as a freelance video journalist for Time magazine and as a producer for Reuters during that time. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Egypt in 2008, where he studied Arabic and conducted research on local media.
