Pleitgen served as CNN’s Berlin reporter from 2006 until 2014, providing insight into the political, economic, and cultural impacts of this vital European power. In 2009 and 2013, he was a key figure in CNN’s coverage of the German Bundestag’s elections, and in 2014, he covered the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, drawing on his own family’s personal involvement with the event.
In addition, he has traveled extensively throughout Syria, reporting from Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, and other cities in the war-torn country. He was also the first international journalist to report from Damascus just days after chemical weapons were used against rebel-held regions in 2013, almost triggering a US military intervention.
Pleitgen was also present in Aleppo after Syrian government forces retook control of the city in late 2016. Pleitgen was a crucial reporter during the Arab Spring in 2011, reporting from Egypt as the revolution that eventually overthrew Mubarak’s regime unfolded and was one of the first journalists to enter Libya’s besieged city of Misrata, winning an Emmy for live coverage of the protests in Cairo.
Pleitgen also went undercover in Myanmar, which was then ruled by a harsh Junta, to cover the aftermath of hurricane Nargis in 2008 and the rigged elections and release of pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010. Fred also fills in for Christiane Amanpour on CNN International’s flagship Amanpour show, where he interviews world leaders and other international newsmakers. Pleitgen has covered major issues like as the Asian Tsunami in 2004, the death of Pope John Paul II and the subsequent election of Cardinal Ratzinger, the first German pope, and now Pope Benedict XVI. Pleitgen, who speaks German, English, and French, was deployed to deliver German listeners footage of the devastating aftermath of Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina in the United States.
