James Brown CBS
Brown went into the business sector after failing to join the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks squad when he tried out in the mid-1970s. He worked for Xerox and Eastman Kodak. Brown began his career in sports broadcasting in 1984, when he was offered a job doing television broadcasts for the Washington Bullets as well as a job as an analyst for The NBA on CBS alongside Frank Glieber. Later in his career, he worked as an anchor at WDVM-TV (later WUSA) in Washington and at CBS Sports.
In 1987, CBS Sports rehired Brown as a play-by-play announcer for the NFL and college basketball coverage on the network, as well as a reporter for the NBA Finals (calling games with Tom Heinsohn during the 1990 NBA Playoffs) and the 1990 National League Championship Series. He also hosted the afternoon show during the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, and Lillehammer, Norway, respectively. He also co-hosted CBS Sports Saturday/Sunday, a weekend anthology series, while at CBS.
James Brown FOX NHL
Brown acquired the role of host of the NFL on Fox pregame show in 1994. Former football players Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long, as well as former coach Jimmy Johnson, were on set with him. During Brown’s stint on the show, Cris Collinsworth and Ronnie Lott also made appearances.
Brown was the principal studio host for FOX NHL Saturday from 1994 to 1998. In the EA Sports video game NHL ’97, he played in a similar role, using full-motion footage. In Madden NFL 2001, his voice was heard. Brown filled in for Chip Caray as the studio presenter for Fox Saturday Baseball on August 23, 1997. Brown departed Fox after the 2005 NFL season to return to CBS Sports. Brown stated a desire to be closer to his home in Washington, D.C. as the reason for his decision.
After a one-year tenure on CBS’s college basketball coverage in 2007, Brown was fired. While Greg Gumbel, the principal host, is on assignment, he still hosts the college basketball pregame, halftime, and postgame in the CBS studios in New York City. When he was working for FOX, he acquired a second home in Century City, California, because their NFL program was situated there. The NCAA also named him one of the top 100 most impactful student-athletes.
