Cox has covered everything from the banking system’s collapse to presidential politics to municipal government disputes in his native Pennsylvania during his media career, which began in 1987. Cox joined CNBC in 2007, right as the worst of the credit crisis was about to erupt and the website was still in its early stages of development.
He contributed to the coverage of the demise of Bear Stearns and then Lehman Brothers, penning smart and significant stories on the demise of some of Wall Street’s biggest names and how investors may survive the crisis. Prior to joining CNBC, Cox worked at CNNMoney, where he wrote a series of reports that were the first to link increased ethanol demand to rising grocery costs. While at CNN, he focused on alternative energy and also covered technology and banking. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous honors, including those from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and newspaper associations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
He was cited twice by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association for commentary, including a series of essays he published after the terrorist atrocities on Sept. 11, 2001. He was also the primary editor of award-winning studies on gangs, child molestation, and education costs, about which he lectured at Columbia University. The New Jersey Press Association recognized the expense of education series as public service journalism. Cox worked in print for 18 years, including nine years as a senior editor.
