Among the more significant stories Koinange has covered for CNN in Africa are the Darfur crisis, civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the Niger famine, for which he won an Emmy. The Nigerian government chastised Koinange in early 2007 for his coverage of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). Koinange accompanied masked MEND guerillas to a camp where they were holding a number of Filipino hostages, according to his report. The Nigerian government claimed the report was “staged,” which CNN denied. CNN announced Koinange’s departure from the network on May 29, 2007.
