He began his broadcasting career at CHRW radio in London, Ontario, where he was the first news director and worked on Western Mustangs football broadcasts as the University of Western Ontario’s campus station was formally established. In 1981, he got his first job as a reporter for Global Ontario after graduating. He joined CTV as a parliamentary correspondent in 1986, and in 1988 he joined CBC Television as a reporter and anchor, hosting Midday from 1992 to 1994. He also worked as a fill-in anchor on The National.
Newman moved to ABC News in the United States in 1994, where he hosted ABC World News Now until 1996. He also served as an anchor for ABC World News This Morning and as a correspondent for World News Tonight. Following the departure of Elizabeth Vargas, ABC News appointed Newman as Good Morning America’s newsreader in June 1997. He was named co-anchor of Good Morning America with Lisa McRee in May 1998. The show’s ratings continued to suffer, and both McRee and Newman were reassigned to other reporting duties within ABC in January 1999, with Newman becoming a correspondent for Nightline and a substitute anchor for Peter Jennings and Carole Simpson on both the weeknight and Sunday editions of World News Tonight. Global Television launched Global National with Kevin Newman as its first anchor and executive editor in 2001. In 2005 and 2006, Newman won the Gemini Award for Best News Anchor. Newman announced his resignation from Global Television in April 2010, effective August 30, 2010. CTV News announced in August 2013 that Newman would host a new prime time show on CTV News Channel called Kevin Newman Live, which would premiere on November 18, 2013. Seven months later, the show was canceled. Newman joined CTV National News as a fill-in anchor in late 2014, and in September 2016 was named host and managing editor of the weekly investigative program W5. Newman retired from network television in September 2019 and now runs his own company, Kevin Newman Ideas, which produces TV shows, specials, and documentaries.
