Previously a Democrat, he voiced his support for President Donald Trump in a July 2020 interview, marking the first time he has done so for a Republican presidential candidate. Terrell, who refers to himself as “Leo 2.0,” says he is a happy guy now that he is a Republican.

Terrell was admitted to the California Bar on December 4, 1990. He was the Chairman of the Black-Korean Alliance, a member of the Statewide Commission Against Hate Crimes, and a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Advisory Board. In 1998, Terrell published Your Rights at Work—The Things Your Boss Won’t Tell You. Terrell joined the NAACP in 1990 and provided pro bono legal services to the organization. Terrell quit the NAACP after expressing support for Carolyn Kuhl, a Los Angeles County judge nominated by President George W. Bush to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, whose appointment was filibustered in the United States Senate.

Hilary O. Shelton, director of the NAACP’s Washington, D.C. office, responded: “He’s not a lawyer for the NAACP, and he’s not even a former NAACP lawyer. He’s helped us out as a volunteer, which we appreciate. However, he is not speaking for us when he takes a position that is diametrically opposed to ours.”

Terrell has appeared on Nightline, Larry King Live, Hannity & Colmes, The O’Reilly Factor, Today, Good Morning America, and many radio programs to provide a legal and political opinion. Terrell, an O. J. Simpson family friend, provided professional legal analysis on Simpson’s civil trial. Terrell ran for the Los Angeles City Council District 10 seat in 2003 and finished fifth out of seven candidates.
