Robin Roberts is a television host in the United States. ABC’s Good Morning America is hosted by Roberts. Roberts was the first woman of color and the first openly LGBTQ+ woman to host the popular American television game show Jeopardy. Roberts attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communication in 1983. On January 14, 2007, edition of Costas on the Radio, Roberts stated that she was offered a scholarship to play basketball at Louisiana State University but decided that the school was too large and impersonal after touring the campus. She saw a road sign for Southeastern Louisiana University on her way back to Pass Christian from that visit, stopped to visit, and decided to enroll.
The only scholarship available was a tennis scholarship, and she was promised that a journalism scholarship would be available by the time she graduated. She went on to become a standout performer for the women’s basketball team, finishing her career as the third all-time leading scorer (1,446 points) and rebounder for the school (1,034). Roberts is one of only three Lady Lions to have 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. She averaged a career-high 27.6 points per game during her senior year. On February 5, 2011, Southeastern held a ceremony to honor the retirement of Roberts’ jersey, number 21.

Roberts was diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer in 2007. She had surgery on August 3 and had completed eight chemotherapy treatments by January 2008. She was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a bone marrow disease, in 2012. Be the Match Registry, a nonprofit run by the National Marrow Donor Program saw a 1,800% increase in donors the day Roberts announced her illness. She took a leave of absence from GMA to undergo a bone marrow transplant and returned home in October 2012. On February 20, 2013, she returned to GMA.

Roberts started her career as a sports anchor and reporter for WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1983. She moved to WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1984. She worked as a sports anchor and reporter for WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1986. She worked as a sports anchor and reporter for WAGA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1988 to 1990. While in Atlanta, she worked as a radio host for V-103.
She began working as a sportscaster for ESPN in February 1990 and remained there until 2005. “Go on with your bad self!” she exclaimed on SportsCenter. In June 1995, Roberts began working for ABC News, specifically as a featured reporter for Good Morning America.
The WBCA presented Roberts with the Mel Greenberg Media Award in 2001. Roberts worked as a contributor to both ESPN and Good Morning America. During that time, she was primarily the GMA news anchor.
