Abbott is familiar with the skies over Hampton Roads. For 17 years, he was a pilot for the Virginia Beach Police Department. As a Patrol/EMS Pilot, he was assigned to the VBPD Aviation Unit. He helped ground units apprehend a number of felons and performed the first MEDEVAC in VBPD history. Abbott’s fascination with flying began when he was a child. Abbott joined the United States Navy in 1977. He was chosen and attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, before retiring as a Lieutenant Commander/Naval Aviator. During Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, Abbott’s HC-11 Detachment 8 flew more than 200 hours in support of 59 multi-national forces. As the Helicopter Standardization and NATOPS officer for the Navy’s undergraduate helicopter training pipeline, Abbott also directed and evaluated rotary-wing flight instructors. He also logged 885 hours as an HT-18 helicopter flight instructor.
