Hartman’s award-winning feature series, Everybody Has a Story, made him a household name. David Johnson, a reporter with the Lewiston Morning Tribune, gave Hartman the idea. He began by writing a few tales for Public Eye. Hartman would throw a dart at a map of the United States and then travel to the location where the dart landed. When Hartman arrived, he would pick a name out of a phonebook and try to find someone who would agree to be interviewed and give their “story.”

From Hawaii to Alaska, from Buckhannon, West Virginia, to Miami, Florida, Hartman went throughout the country. The series has produced 123 stories since its debut in 1998. Each “Everybody in the World Has a Tale” part featured an astronaut in the International Space Station spinning a globe and pointing to random spots for Hartman to travel to and locate a story.

The CBS Evening News With Katie Couric featured Hartman’s “Assignment America” stories, which were inspired by Charles Kuralt’s On the Road series, which aired on CBS from 1967 to 1980.
