Blocker began his career in the US Air Force as an intelligence analyst. From 1987 to 1990, he served for four years before being honorably discharged. He later became the head of the CIA training branch at Camp Peary, Virginia, also known as “The Farm.” Blocker served in ten countries throughout the course of his 28-year career, including Senegal, Burundi, Uganda (undercover; beginning in 2003), Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Morocco, and Pakistan. “In my 56 years, I’ve had 27 addresses, 22 of them as an adult,” he stated. He enlisted the help of covert sources and spies to gather information on prospective threats and targets in his area of responsibility. In 1996, as part of his intelligence duties in Senegal, he began playing music. While working covertly in Uganda, Blocker rose to prominence as the lead singer of the “Kampala Jazz All-Stars,” a popular local band in the capital city of Kampala.

While in college, he became interested in Judaism and began wearing a chai as a necklace. After two years of study, Blocker turned to Judaism in 2017. He considers himself to be a Conservative Jew. Blocker was the most senior black officer in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations when he resigned in 2018. He had the rank of a three-star general. He received the CIA’s Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal upon retirement.

He also consults on projects in the entertainment sector, such as season 2 of CONDOR, a television version of James Grady’s Six Days of the Condor, which stars a young CIA analyst as the main character.

Blocker is also a board member of the groups Peace4Kids and HumanSlavery.com, which work to improve the lives of foster children and to prevent human trafficking and slavery, respectively. Blocker was on President-elect Joe Biden’s shortlist for Director of the CIA, according to Fox News in November 2020.
