John Yang is a well-known American journalist and commentator who has been anchoring PBS News Weekend since December 31, 2022. Before that, he made a name for himself as a special correspondent for PBS NewsHour and had a remarkable career at both NBC News and ABC News.
After finishing college, Yang kicked off his journalism journey at The Boston Globe, where he reported from 1980 to 1981. He then took on the role of correspondent at Time magazine from 1981 to 1986, followed by a position at The Wall Street Journal from 1986 to 1990. In 1990, Yang transitioned to The Washington Post, where he dedicated nearly ten years as a reporter and editor. From 2002 to 2004, Yang took on the role of ABC News’ Middle East correspondent, working out of Jerusalem. He reported on significant events in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including suicide bombings and Israeli military actions in Palestinian territories. In April 2005, he was part of the ABC News crew that covered the passing of Pope John Paul II, which earned them yet another Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award.
In January 2007, Yang made the switch to NBC News as a correspondent and was promoted to White House correspondent later that same year. He reported on the 2008 presidential election for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. By 2009, he transitioned from NBC’s Washington bureau to its Chicago bureau.
Yang joined PBS NewsHour as a correspondent in February 2016 and was appointed anchor of PBS News Weekend, a position he has proudly held since the end of 2022.
