Yang worked as a reporter for The Boston Globe from 1980 to 1981 after graduating from college. Yang began his career as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post in 1990, and stayed there for nearly ten years. He covered domestic politics as a reporter, including Congress and the White House. As an editor, he oversaw economic policy coverage in the business section of the daily, as well as political features in the Style section.
Yang departed The Post in November 1999 after being given a job as an ABC News correspondent in Washington, D.C. He rose to prominence after covering the George W. Bush presidential campaign during the Republican Party primaries in 2000. Yang covered the Al Gore campaign during the primaries and until the election, and he continued to do so until the Florida election recount. Yang routinely reported live from the Pentagon after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and was a member of the ABC News crew that won a Peabody Award and an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for its 9/11 coverage.
Yang was posted to Jerusalem as ABC’s Middle East correspondent from 2002 until 2004. He reported on every significant development in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including suicide bombings and Israeli military operations in Palestinian territory. Yang covered Pope John Paul II’s death in April 2005, collaborating with an ABC News crew that earned an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for its coverage of the event.
Yang joined NBC News as a correspondent in January 2007. He was named NBC News White House correspondent in November 2007. For NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, he covered the 2008 presidential election. Yang moved from NBC News’ Washington office to its Chicago bureau in 2009. In a note to coworkers, Yang said, “NBC is shifting me from the city of large egos to the city of broad shoulders.” Yang got a post as a correspondent for the PBS News Hour in February of 2016.
