Jonathan LaPook Biography

Jonathan LaPook is the Chief Medical Correspondent for CBS News and an American board-certified physician in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He is a Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and has an active medical practice in New York City. He was named the Mebane Professor of Gastroenterology in 2013. In 2006, he joined CBS News.

LaPook began working as a Medical Correspondent for the “CBS Evening News” in 2006, with host Katie Couric. He was named CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent in 2013, and he has been on “CBS This Morning,” “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley,” CBS Radio, and CBS News Streaming on a regular basis. In an endeavor to provide insight and perspective on a wide range of health and medical topics, he has interviewed patients, healthcare practitioners, researchers, thought-leaders, and government officials, including President Obama twice.

For his coverage of the national drug shortage in 2012, for team coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, for Sunday Morning, Outstanding Program in 2019, and for Sunday Morning, Outstanding Program in 2020, LaPook has received four Emmy awards. The Alliance for Women in Media honored him with a Gracie Award in the News Feature Series category in 2018 for two breakthroughs in 60 Minutes investigations into the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.

In 2018, LaPook was a finalist for the George Foster Peabody Award for his two 60 Minutes investigative reports on the gymnastics controversy. In 2007 and 2013, he received two Edward R. Murrow Awards for “Best Broadcast.” He also received a 2015 New York Press Club Journalism Award for his work on the WCBS-AM News Team Special “Eye on Ebola.” For his documentary series Doc Dot Com, he received a Webby Award in 2010.
