He comes to CNN from Chicago, where he served as a general assignment reporter for CBS and as a Univision correspondent and anchor. He is bilingual and has reported in both Spanish and English throughout his career. Rafael has covered a variety of major events since joining CNN in 2009, including the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. He also traveled to Jamaica to cover violent protests following a manhunt for a criminal gang’s accused leader, Peru to cover Joran var der Sloot’s arrest, and Brazil to cover the World Cup and huge floods that displaced thousands of people.
