Considering that foreign journalists were prohibited from entering Syria, she reported on the Syrian civil war from CNN offices in Atlanta, Georgia, Lebanon, and Abu Dhabi.

Maktabi first gained international recognition for her coverage of the 2006 Lebanon War. From July to September of that year, there was war in Lebanon. During this battle, Arab TV news outlets like al-Arabiya, al-Jazeera, NTV, and LBC-TV sent a large number of female reporters into the war zone for the first time. Prior to their assignment, the journalists said they had not had any training in covering wars. Despite being a “rookie” reporter at the time of the war, Maktabi was able to secure exclusive access to al-Arabiya.

1,191 Lebanese died as a result of the Israeli-Lebanese conflict, while thousands more were injured or fled. The International Red Cross asked the journalists to keep their distance from the humanitarian workers when they were moving in a convoy because, according to Maktabi, Israelis targeted journalists. During the battle, an Israeli rocket murdered Lebanese photojournalist Layal Nejib.

Maktabi would be coming back to al-Arabiya in October 2012 after spending two years with CNN.

Maktabi started her television career with Future TV in Lebanon, where she spent ten years hosting game shows and presenting the weather. From July 2005 to July 2010, she provided primetime news for al Arabiya. When she covered the Israel-Hezbollah War, a 34-day military battle in Lebanon that is sometimes referred as as the July War or the 2006 Lebanon War, her career took a different turn. She left al-Aribiya on 5 April 2010 and began working for CNN as anchor of CNN’s Inside the Middle East, where she covers Arab news and culture for CNN’s global audience. Currently, Maktabi resides in the United Arab Emirates.  In October 2012, she made plans to return to al-Arabiya known.
