Sarah Montague Electoral Commission

In 2018, she was chastised for incorrectly attributing the Electoral Commission’s findings that the Vote Leave campaign violated the law during the 2016 referendum, thereby shielding several government ministers from resigning. She repeatedly referred to “these allegations,” when they were, in fact, the findings – the verdict – of the statutory body tasked with ensuring the integrity of UK elections and the 2016 referendum. In July 2019, the Electoral Commission’s decision and fine were overturned in court. “This raises serious questions about its [the Electoral Commission’s] conduct both during and after the referendum,” said the defendant in the court case.
