Savannah Guthrie The Today Show

After filling in for Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry on Today, it was announced on May 9, 2011, that Guthrie will join Natalie Morales and Al Roker as co-hosts of the 9 a.m. hour, as well as the show’s Chief Legal Editor. Following Vieira’s announcement of her departure from the show as main program co-host, Curry and Morales were promoted to primary co-host and news anchor, respectively. On June 9, 2011, Guthrie left The Daily Rundown for Today and was named NBC News chief legal expert, making her first appearance in this post on May 25, 2011. On June 29, 2012, it was announced that Guthrie would replace Curry as co-anchor of Today. On July 9, 2012, she joined Matt Lauer as a co-anchor for the first time.

She had an interview with Donald Trump in 2011 in which he discussed his role in the “birther” issue surrounding Barack Obama. She interviewed Conrad Murray later that year after he was convicted guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson’s death. She had firsthand knowledge of Osama bin Laden’s demise. Guthrie took over as host from Matt Lauer on November 29, 2017, alongside Hoda Kotb.

She has presented the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC since 2012. In the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, she conducted another interview with then-President Donald Trump during his re-election campaign.

Guthrie probed him on his debts, his response to the coronavirus, and his failure to repudiate the right-wing conspiracy theory QAnon outright. Many people praised Guthrie for the interview, and many pointed out that, unlike his talks with more conservative channels like Fox News, this was the first time Trump was not able to dominate and make statements unquestioned during the 2020 election campaign. Guthrie was named to Time’s list of the year’s 100 most important people.
