T. J. Holmes Biography
T. J. Holmes is an American journalist and national television personality who currently co-hosts the Amy & T.J. podcast on iHeartRadio alongside his partner, Amy Robach. The duo launched the podcast after their departure from ABC News on January 27, 2023, which followed public disclosure of their romantic relationship.
Holmes began his television career at KSNF Channel 16 in Joplin, Missouri. While still a student at the University of Arkansas, he drove to Joplin to personally deliver his résumé and demo reel—and was hired on the spot. During his brief tenure at KSNF, he worked as a producer, assignment reporter, and weekend anchor.
In 2000, Holmes returned to his home state of Arkansas to join CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock as a general assignment reporter. Within a year, he was promoted to weekend anchor, marking a rapid rise in his local news career.
In 2003, Holmes moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to join KNTV, the NBC-owned-and-operated station, where he anchored the 5 p.m. evening newscast. Holmes joined CNN in October 2006 as a news anchor and correspondent. He initially co-anchored CNN Saturday & Sunday Morning with Betty Nguyen. After Nguyen departed for CBS in March 2010, Holmes continued anchoring the program solo.
During his time at CNN, Holmes reported live from numerous major breaking news events. These included the devastating tornadoes that struck Joplin, Missouri, in May 2011; New Orleans during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill; and Blacksburg, Virginia, in the immediate aftermath of the Virginia Tech campus shootings. He also anchored from Ground Zero in New York City on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Holmes covered the historic first visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States in 2008, anchoring live from the papal Mass at Yankee Stadium. He was among the first journalists to interview survivors of US Airways Flight 1549 after the plane’s emergency landing in the Hudson River in January 2009. Holmes joined ABC News on September 26, 2014, initially on a freelance and temporary basis. He filled in on the overnight programs World News Now and America This Morning, and filed reports for Good Morning America when news broke overnight. Shortly thereafter, he began substituting on GMA as needed.
On December 23, 2014, Holmes was named permanent co-anchor of World News Now. He later expanded his role at the network, and on September 21, 2020, he joined GMA3: What You Need to Know as a co-anchor.
