Holmes began his television career in Joplin, Missouri, at KSNF Channel 16. He drove from the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville to Joplin to hand-deliver his resume and reel. He was hired right away. Holmes worked as a producer, assignment reporter, and weekend anchor at KSNF for less than a year.

In 2000, Holmes returned to his home state of Arkansas to work as a general assignment reporter for CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock. He was promoted to weekend anchor within a year. In 2003, Holmes accepted a position as anchor of the 5 p.m. evening news at KNTV, an NBC O&O station in the San Francisco Bay Area.

He went to Athens, Greece to cover the 2004 Olympics, the first Summer Games held after the September 11th attacks, while working at KNTV. While at KNTV, he covered a number of other national stories, including the historic recall election of California Governor Gray Davis, which resulted in the election of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Scott Peterson’s double-murder trial.
