Monita Rajpal Career

Rajpal decided to work a part-time job during her second year of college by signing up for a two-month contract as a switchboard operator at the CHUM-City Building. After earning a degree in radio and television arts from Ryerson University in 1996, Rajpal began a six-month employment contract as a receptionist at ChumCity. She answered the phone and gave guests building tours. Vice President of Programming Stephen Hurlbut asked her to stay on for a few weeks to undertake research on the last day of her contract. At CP24, Rajpal was hired as Hurlbut’s assistant in 1997, just as the channel was beginning to air. She later worked as an anchor and reporter for CP24 and Citytv, covering subjects for the “prime time nightly news” such teacher strikes, federal elections, and Toronto homelessness.

In February 2001, a CNN executive was perched in his Toronto hotel room flipping through the television channels when he noticed Rajpal. Rajpal was offered a CNN International anchor post based in Atlanta; he accepted, and he began working for CNN in 2001. She spent roughly 12 hours a day reading news magazines like The New Yorker and The Economist while working at the CNN Center. She had conducted interviews with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Colombian President Andrés Pastrana Arango, and Liberian President Moses Blah while residing in Atlanta.

She covered major stories including the fight against terrorism, allegations of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, conflict in Liberia, former American president Jimmy Carter’s visit to Cuba, and the French presidential election.

Late in 2004, Rajpal relocated to London, where she served as the host of the European edition of CNN Today as well as the art program Art of Life. Rajpal presided over the CNN Icon program about art and culture in 2010. The first three episodes of the show covered advertising, Les Paul the guitarist’s legacy, and fashion and art in Paris. While residing in London in 2011, she co-anchored World One, a daily CNN International news program.

Rajpal relocated to Hong Kong from London in late 2012. She served as the host of CNN NewsCenter and TalkAsia, both of which debuted at the start of 2013. While TalkAsia is a weekly program that features a 30-minute discussion with a well-known international figure, CNN NewsCenter is a news program that examines international headlines. She has conducted interviews with notable figures for CNN, such as I. M. Pei, Vicente Fox, Al Gore, and Tom Ford. On July 4, 2014, Rajpal quit CNN.
